America's first pretzel bakery offers creatively flavored pretzels made using ancient pretzel-making techniques..
The Background
America's first pretzel bakery, situated in a stone house in the center of Lititz, was the joint brainchild of a traveling laborer and bread baker Julius Sturgis. Since 1850, pretzels have been made in Lititz with a recipe derived from French monasteries. At this site, just a few blocks from the equally impressive Wilbur chocolate factory, the historic town celebrates its pretzel-bending history.
The Experience
You can tour the original pretzel bakery with its still-working brick ovens. Your guide will show you how to twist a pretzel and explain the symbolism behind its unique shape. A gift shop in front sells kitschy crafts and pretzels of all shapes and flavors--including chocolate-covered, peanut-butter-filled and even Maryland Crab varieties.
a place one MUST see. Lititz is a charming and beautiful town. If you want to stay the night, the Alden House is a wonderful B&B. The hosts are the nicest folks in the world and will give you a behind-the scenes understanding of the area. Sturgis Pretzel House makes the BEST soft pretzels. Go to Lititz and enjoy.
